"Oh, the comfort, the inexpressible comfort of feeling safe with a person, having neither to weigh thought nor measure words, but pouring out them all right out, just as they are, chaff and grain together, certain that a faithful hand will take and sift them, keep what is worth keeping, and with a breath of kindness, blow the rest away." - Shoshone The concept of a community means many
different things to many different people. For most of us in
the civilized world, it's an area where we happen to life
near a bunch of other people that we ignore most of the
time. A true community is much more than this. It is a
social system whose members give their support to the
community while receiving support back from the community.
It functions very much like a large extended family where no
one is more or less important than anyone else, and if one
person is hungry, then everyone is hungry. A community works
collectively for the benefit of its members. Since a community depends on it's
personal and familial bonds, groups over a certain size will
not function as a community. The optimum size is variable,
but tends to range anywhere from 20 - 300 humans depending
on their available resources and lifestyle.
