"Any act that violates a natural process, state or being through force or coercion. Examples of violence would include rape, murder, government, totalitarian agriculture, strip mining, deforestation, animal testing and so on, while acts that would not be considered violence include subsistence hunting, self-defense, defense of others, defense of the land base and so on." - Alex Guillotte

The concept of activism is frightening to a lot of people. They imagine lines of police with big clear plastic shields shooting rubber bullets, spraying fire hoses, and launching tear gas into a retreat ing crowd. The crowds then hurl back bottles and rocks. Unfortunately, this is like looking at a fight in a baseball dugout and thinking that is what the game is all about.

The reason that many of us have this distorted perspective is because television and newspapers only want to show the violent, confrontational events. They want the images that look dramatic. Unfortunately, this gives people a very limited view of the whole picture. In Quebec City (April 2001) for example, the news stations showed endless hours of a few hundred angry protesters clashing with police. They did not show the 40,000+ peaceful protesters who were marching only a few blocks away who simply wanted their voices to be heard.

What is activism? Activism involves any kind of direct action in order to initiate cultural change. These actions can include pickets, marches, parades, passive resistance, media solicitation, public speaking, petitions, letter writing campaigns, bumper stickers, teaching, and thousands of other ideas that are designed to challenge the status quo. It really doesn't matter if you travel thousands of miles or send e-mails from the privacy (and relative safety) of you own home. All activism techniques are valuable and necessary. It's important that we don't get hung-up on the idea that you must be marching in the streets to be a real activist.

Activism, General

Amnesty International - Founded in London in 1961, Amnesty International is a Nobel Prize-winning grassroots activist organization with over one million members worldwide. Amnesty International is dedicated to freeing prisoners of conscience, gaining fair trials for political prisoners, ending torture, political killings and "disappearances," and abolishing the death penalty throughout the world. Amnesty International USA (AIUSA) is the U.S. Section of Amnesty International.

Biotic Baking Brigade (Pie Activism) - The Biotic Baking Brigade has a vision for our home here in Ecotopia. We are working toward a time when corporate crooks and their lackeys in government and the nonprofit sector will have to leave this bioregion for fear of our delicious mischief. Of course, pie-throwing is just one tool in the large toolbox of resistance.

Bite Back Magazine - Literally every day the brave women and men of the Animal Liberation Front are out liberating, smashing, painting and burning their way across the world for no other reason than to bring us closer to animal liberation! Bite Back is a 32 page magazine, full of direct action reports, prisoner news, stories and photos.

Black Blocs for Dummies - What is a Black Bloc? A black bloc is a collection of anarchists and anarchist affinity groups that organize together for a particular protest action. The flavor of the blackbloc changes from action to action, but the main goals are to provide solidarity in the face of a repressive police state and to convey an anarchist critique of whatever is being protested that day.

Black Cat Distro Catalogue (PDF) - They distribute information relating to animal liberation, radical environmentalism, anarchist and anti-capitalist politics, as well as how-to informational guides and related material. They are the official distributors for both the North American Animal Liberation Front Supporters Group and the (former) Earth Liberation Front Press Office. Their purpose is to spread information to the activist communities.

Breathing Planet

Colours of Resistance - Colours of Resistance (COR) is a grassroots network of people who actively work to develop multiracial, anti-racist politics in the movement against global capitalism. COR is made up mostly of organizers of colour, but we recognize that both white organizers and organizers of colour have roles in our work, and that these roles are distinct from one another. COR is both a think tank and an action tank, linking global issues with those in our own communities, and providing and sharing support, ideas, and strategies across borders. Our collective work includes but is not limited to producing a zine, a website, and published articles, sharing ideas through an email discussion list, and facilitating workshops and events.

CrimethInc.com & CrimethInc.net - History is not something that happens to people -- it is the activity of people. In every moment, in every decision and gesture, we make our culture, our life stories, our world, whether we take responsibility for this ourselves or ascribe this power to executives, politicians, pop stars, economic systems, or deities.

In a society which glorifies their power and our passivity, all thought which challenges this passivity is thoughtcrime. Crimethink is the transgression without which freedom and self-determination are impossible -- it is the skeleton key that unlocks the prisons of our age.

CrimethInc. is the black market where we trade in this precious contraband. Here, the secret worlds of shoplifters, rioters, dropouts, deserters, adulterers, vandals, daydreamers -- that is to say, of all of us, in those moments when, wanting more, we indulge in little revolts -- converge to form gateways to new worlds where theft, cheating, warfare, boredom, and so on are simply obsolete.

Dropload - Dropload is a place for you to drop your files off and have them picked up by someone else at a later time. Recipients you specify are sent an email with instructions on how to download the file. Files are removed from the system after 7 days, regardless if they have been picked up or not. You can upload any type of file, mp3, movies, docs, pdfs, up to 100MB each! Recipients can be anyone with an email address.

Endgame Research: A project of the Public Information Network - Political and economic changes around the world are causing widespread social upheaval, natural resource depletion, and ecosystem collapse. Multinational corporations and governments push for unrestrained "free trade" in an increasingly vulnerable global economy. The uncontrolled globalization of industry and capital is making self-determination, self-sufficiency, and the prospect of truly sustainable economies and communities increasingly difficult. Activists working to protect human rights, community independence, and the environment see the connections between their issues, and are working to realize a lasting alliance.

The mission of the Public Information Network is to provide research services and training to citizens who are working for corporate and governmental accountability, and who are committed to socially just and ecologically sustainable societies. We promote an understanding among activists, the media, and the general public of the environmental and socioeconomic impacts of the impacts of transnational corporations, financial institutions, and governments. We support the replacement of the giant corporation by more sustainable and equitable institutions.

We promote alliances among groups working on ecological, democratic, human rights, and labor concerns. We encourage coordination between activists in developed and developing nations, and between those concerned with social, economic, and environmental problems.

Fighting for Our Lives (PDF)

Flash Mobbing - Mobbing is the creation of a crowd on a moment's notice for no particular reason, though this technique can obviously be used to promote all kinds of agendas. The websites listed below make this process very easy.

IdeaList - Action Without Borders is a global network of individuals and organizations working to build a world where all people can live free and dignified lives. Action Without Borders is independent of any government, political ideology or religious creed. Its work is guided by the common desire of its members and supporters to find practical solutions to social and environmental problems, in a spirit of generosity and mutual respect.

International Answer - We are assembling International A.N.S.W.E.R. (Act Now to Stop War & End Racism) to call for worldwide rallies against war and racism. On September 29, there [was] a national march and rally at the White House in Washington DC, as well as marches on the West Coast of the U.S. and around the world. We call[ed] on all people of conscience and progressive organizations to take up this call and organize rallies around the world.

The Last Wizards - When visiting The Last Wizards you will find essays and discussions on the tools, techniques and forces that shift and alter our world. The Last Wizards are concerned with philosophy, environmental and social justice politics, postmodernism, mass media, scholarly occult theory, culture, war, globalization, converging technologies and the singularity.

The Memory Hole - The Memory Hole exists to preserve and spread material that is in danger of being lost, is hard to find, or is not widely known. This includes: government files, corporate memos, court documents (incl. lawsuits and transcripts), police reports and eyewitness statements, congressional testimony, reports (governmental and non-governmental), maps, patents, web pages, photographs, video, and sound recordings, news articles, and books (and portions of books). The emphasis is on material that exposes things that we're not supposed to know (or that we're supposed to forget).

Ruckus Society - Direct action has long been a catalyst for social change. The conscious disobedience of unjust laws can capture the depth of injustice in a single powerful moment, creating an inspiring, deeply resonating energy. From the struggle for civil rights to the development of the modern environmental movement, creative nonviolent protest has played a critical role in galvanizing activists, educating the public and shaping the debate over many important issues. Effective protest, however, does not always happen spontaneously. It often requires careful planning and preparations, and the participation of experienced activists.

The Ruckus Society provides training in the skills of non-violent civil disobedience to help environmental and human rights organizations achieve their goals.

Security Culture - Helping activists stay safe in our oppressive world.

Slashdot - In the beginning there was no Slashdot. Bored and confused geeks would scribble "First Post" in the sand. Grits were strictly for consumption and there wasn't a place to get nerd oriented news. Then in September of 97 Rob "CmdrTaco" Malda changed all that. With the help of Jeff "Hemos" Bates and others, Slashdot has stumbled forward with the simple mission to provide 'News for Nerds. Stuff that Matters'.

Today Slashdot is owned by OSTG, but it is still run by many of the same people as it was 'Back in the Day'. Today we serve millions of pages to hundreds of thousands of readers. But the goal is still the same.

You can read more about each of the authors, including contact information, and figure out who to blame for what by reading The Authors Page. But the majority of the work is done by the tons of people who use the Submission Form to send in the stories that we post every day. Thanks go to them for helping make this site the cool place that it is.

Smart Meme - We are a group of writers, thinkers, artists, organizers and activists who share a common goal of perforating the current global system of ecological and social oppression from the inside out. We hold a central belief that the age of single issue politics is over and through a holistic, values based critique of a culture out of control we can begin to shift paradigms. Our aim is to search out points in the cultural narrative that expose the inherent contradictions between our daily activities and the basic values of life and justice. Our vision is for artists, activists, and cultural critics to pry open the existing cultural mythology by unmasking those flawed assumptions and strategically insert fertile seeds for a true earth based democracy.

Source Watch - A primary purpose of SourceWatch is documenting the PR and propaganda activities of public relations firms and public relations professionals engaged in managing and manipulating public perception, opinion and policy. SourceWatch also includes profiles on think tanks, industry-funded organizations and industry-friendly experts that work to influence public opinion and public policy on behalf of corporations, governments and special interests. Over time, SourceWatch has broadened to include others involved in public debates including media outlets, journalists and government agencies.

Starhawk - Starhawk is the author or coauthor of nine books, including The Spiral Dance: A Rebirth of the Ancient Religion of the Great Goddess (Harper & Row, 1979, 1989, 1999); the now classic ecotopian novel The Fifth Sacred Thing (Bantam, 1993); Dreaming the Dark: Magic, Sex, and Politics (Beacon, 1982); and Truth or Dare: Encounters with Power, Authority, and Mystery (Harper & Row, 1987), which won the Media Alliance Meritorious Achievement Award for nonfiction in 1988. Her works have been translated into German, Danish, Dutch, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, French, and Japanese.

She is a veteran of progressive movements and deeply committed to bringing the techniques and creative power of spirituality to political activism. She travels internationally teaching magic, the tools of ritual, and the skills of activism.

Transform Columbus Day - Our alliance is based upon mutual respect for one another, sharing the perspective that Columbus Day is an inherently racist statement of cultural domination. Celebrations honoring Columbus reinforce a historical process of racism, theft, lies, murder, slavery, and the destruction of all aspects of the environment. Individually and collectively we reject Columbus as a heroic personality, and we reject holidays, celebrations or other expressions of adulation for Columbus.

Urbanize.org - "The difference between graffiti and art is PERMISSION!" Graffiti is part of our urban culture. It is a sign of a thriving metropolitan area, and vital component in unmediated free speech which is crucial to a democracy. Unfortunately it is also a convenient scapegoat allowing people to objectify ugliness which doesn't exist on the walls, but in their hearts. Have compassion for the ignorant and realize that what revolts you about what you see is really yourself.

Video Activism - The VAN is an informal association of activists and politically conscious artists using video to support social, economic and environmental justice campaigns.

Whispered Media - The corporate-owned media is increasingly producing news coverage that lacks substance and truth. Now is the time for the grassroots movements to reclaim our history and our vision and create our own media. To this end, Whispered Media was founded as a collective that promotes the use of video, and other media tools, in progressive grassroots movements.

Women in Black - The Women in Black stand in silent vigil to protest war, rape as a tool of war, ethnic cleansing and human rights abuses all over the world. We are silent because mere words cannot express the tragedy that wars and hatred bring. We refuse to add to the cacophony of empty statements that are spoken with the best intentions yet may be erased or go unheard under a passing ambulance or the wound of a bomb exploding nearby.

ZNet (ZMagazine) - Z Magazine's ZNet is a sophisticated web site with diverse extra-web functionality but simple design and graphics for easy navigation. It is a continuous town meeting and intellectual and activist service center for large sectors of the progressive community. It is a place to get useful information, exchange ideas, develop new political programs and unity, engage in online activism, acclimate to and learn new technologies, meet new people, enjoy and educate yourself

You won't find uncivil language or flaming, sexism, racism, or commercialism. What you will find is a community of people seeking to understand society and to change it for the better. Here are some links that provide more info about ZNet and its policies.

Animal Rights

Alf Underground - "If we are trespassing, so were the soldiers who broke down the gates of Hitler's death camps; If we are thieves, so were the members of the Underground Railroad who freed the slaves of the South; And if we are vandals, so were those who destroyed forever the gas chambers of Buchanwald and Auschwitz."

ALF (Animal Liberation Front) - The Animal Liberation Front (ALF) carries out direct action against animal abuse in the form of rescuing animals and causing financial loss to animal exploiters, usually through the damage and destruction of property. The ALF's short-term aim is to save as many animals as possible and directly disrupt the practice of animal abuse. Their long term aim is to end all animal suffering by forcing animal abuse companies out of business.

It is a nonviolent campaign, activists taking all precautions not to harm any animal (human or otherwise). Because ALF actions are against the law, activists work anonymously, either in small groups or individually, and do not have any centralized organization or coordination.

The Animal Liberation Front consists of small autonomous groups of people all over the world who carry out direct action according to the ALF guidelines. Any group of people who are vegetarians or vegans and who carry out actions according to ALF guidelines have the right to regard themselves as part of the ALF.

The ALF guidelines are: (1) To liberate animals from places of abuse, i.e. laboratories, factory farms, fur farms, etc, and place them in good homes where they may live out their natural lives, free from suffering. (2) To inflict economic damage to those who profit from the misery and exploitation of animals. (3) To reveal the horror and atrocities committed against animals behind locked doors, by performing non-violent direct actions and liberations. (4) To take all necessary precautions against harming any animal -- human and non-human.

Animal-Liberation.com - Its purpose is to provide an uncensored clearing house for information and news about animal liberation activities and activists. This service is needed because many actions go unreported by the mainstream media, leaving people in the dark about what is really going on.

Arkangel: for animal liberation - Arkangel is involved in a variety of animal rights related projects.

Circuses.com - Animals used in circuses live a dismal life of domination, confinement, and violent training. It is standard practice to beat, shock, and whip them to make them perform ridiculous tricks that they cannot comprehend.

Farmed Animal Net - A web site created to help people who are working to advance the interests of farmed animals. Here you will find fact sheets, action alerts, important contacts, publications and links.

FARM (Farm Animal Reform Movement)

MassKilling.com - "Auschwitz begins wherever someone looks at a slaughterhouse and thinks: they're only animals." - Theodor Adorno (1903-1969), German Jewish philosopher forced into exile by the Nazis

PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) - PETA believes that animals deserve the most basic rights -- consideration of their own best interests regardless of whether they are useful to humans. Like you, they are capable of suffering and have interests in leading their own lives; therefore, they are not ours to use -- for food, clothing, entertainment, or experimentation, or for any other reason.

Corporate Power

CocaCola Company Under the Nazis, The - The Coca-Cola Company's tale of questionable wartime conduct would be comparatively insignificant and not worth the effort of dwelling upon, were it not for the fact that its product, namely Coca-Cola, was and is a luxury item whose commercial success is inseparably tied to a public image created through advertising.

Corp Watch - CorpWatch counters corporate-led globalization through education and activism. We work to foster democratic control over corporations by building grassroots globalization--a diverse movement for human rights, labor rights and environmental justice.

McSpotlight - The biggest, loudest, most red, most read Anti-McDonald's extravaganza the world has ever seen. Anything you could possibly want to know about McDonald's or McLibel nestles somewhere in our 21,000 files. Don't get us wrong, though, we're not telling you to give up your Big Macs. We just provide the info for you to judge for yourself.

ProzacSpotlight - Ever wonder what's been going on in the Mad World? Well, ProzacSpotlight.org's got the latest word on all of our favourite pill makers.

Sprawl-Busters - No matter what the logo on the building says--Wal-Mart, Home Depot, Target, Lowe's, Kohls, CVS--if its unwanted development, Sprawl-Busters can help you stop it. In hundreds of communities, we have helped citizens groups strategize and carry out a plan to stop the superstores. Our Newsflash page contains the latest on big box battles from around the globe, and the book "Slam Dunking Wal-Mart" has become a citizen's classic for hands-on combat with Sprawl-Marts. If a big box store is causing you a big problem, call on Sprawl-Busters!

They Rule - They Rule allows you to create maps of the interlocking directories of the top companies in the US in 2004. The data was collected from their websites and SEC filings in early 2004, so it may not be completely accurate - companies merge and disappear and directors shift boards.

Wal-Mart Watch - Studies show that for every two jobs created by a Wal-Mart store, the community loses three. Jobs that are retained by a community are merely shifted from local businesses to the giant retailer. In a 1994 report, the Congressional Research Service warned Congress that communities need to evaluate the significance of any job gains at big-box stores against any loss of jobs due to reduced business at competing retailers. The report also pointed out that these so-called new jobs "provide significantly lower wages then jobs in many industries, and are often only part-time positions, seasonal opportunities, or subject to extensive turnover." The Real Story is that when Wal-Mart moves into the neighborhood, it devours local businesses and lowers community living standards.

Culture Jamming

Adbusters - We are a global network of artists, activists, writers, pranksters, students, educators and entrepreneurs who want to advance the new social activist movement of the information age. Our aim is to topple existing power structures and forge a major shift in the way we will live in the 21st century. To this end, Adbusters Media Foundation publishes Adbusters magazine, operates this website and offers its creative services through PowerShift, our advocacy advertising agency.

BadAds - How many ads did you see or hear today? Go ahead and count...we'll wait. Don't forget to count magazine ads, banner ads, radio ads, faxed ads, junk mail, telemarketing calls, TV commercials, ads before movies, product placements, billboards, and spam, spam, spam, spam, spam...

Surprised at the number you came up with? Don't be. Advertising has become so common that it's now the background noise to our lives. But in their effort to get us to buy their products and services, advertisers are becoming more and more intrusive. The result: Our entire life experience is being shaped by companies looking to part us from our cash. Advertisers are taking advantage of every space, every moment in our lives to ask for our money&endash;even while we get married or give birth. (No joke. You'll find information about these things on this site.)

Billboard Liberation Front - The Billboard Liberation Front states emphatically and for all time herein that to Advertise is to Exist. To Exist is to Advertise. Our ultimate goal is nothing short of a personal and singular Billboard for each citizen. Until that glorious day for global communications when every man, woman and child can scream at or sing to the world in 100Pt. type from their very own rooftop; until that day we will continue to do all in our power to encourage the masses to use any means possible to commandeer the existing media and to alter it to their own design.

Cultural Creatives - While Cultural Creatives are a subculture, they lack one critical ingredient in their lives: awareness of themselves as a whole people. We call them the Cultural Creatives precisely because they are already creating a new culture. If they could see how promising this creativity is for all of us, if they could know how large their numbers are, many things might follow. These optimistic, altruistic millions might be willing to speak more frankly in public settings and act more directly in shaping a new way of life for our time and the time ahead. They might lead the way toward an Integral Culture.

Culture Jammers Encyclopedia - The Culture Jammer's Encyclopedia isn't an encyclopedia of culture jammers, so much as an encyclopedia for culture jammers - exposing the cracks in a culture where a jammer can hide the explosives.

Disinformation - Disinformation was designed to be the search service of choice for individuals looking for information on current affairs, politics, new science and the 'hidden information,' that seldom seems to slip through the cracks of the corporate-owned media conglomerates.

Conceptual Guerrilla

Infiltration - Infiltration: the zine about going places you're not supposed to go, is a paper publication devoted to the art of urban exploration, a sort of interior tourism which allows the curious-minded to discover behind-the-scenes sights and have a lot of free fun.

Sarah Jones Online - Sarah Jones, an activist chosen as one of Utne's "30 under 30 who are changing the future", wrote a poem called "Your Revolution". The radio station who aired it was fined $7000 by the FCC and Sarah countersued.

Sucks500 - A place where all people can get together and vent their grievances about Corporate America, American Politics and Politicians.

TV Turnoff Network - TV-Turnoff Network, formerly TV-Free America, is a nonprofit organization that encourages children and adults to watch much less television in order to promote healthier lives and communities.

Young Rebels - There's no reason why we should be anything other than a community of friends. We're all very different from each other and yet we're all basically the same. I don't know how we all got here, or where we'll go after we leave, but we're all together now. I'd like to share my thoughts and dreams of a revolution.

Globalization

Intercontinental Cry - This website is a resource for Indigenous People, Activists, and anyone who wishes to learn about what’s happening in the world.

Survival International - Survival is the only worldwide organisation supporting tribal peoples through public campaigns. It was founded in 1969 after an article by Norman Lewis in the UK's Sunday Times highlighted the massacres, land thefts and genocide taking place in Brazilian Amazonia. Like many modern atrocities, the racist oppression of Brazil's Indians took place in the name of 'economic growth'.

Today, Survival has supporters in 82 countries. It works for tribal peoples' rights in three complementary ways: education, campaigns and funding. We also offer tribal people themselves a platform to address the world. We work closely with local indigenous organisations, and focus on tribal peoples who have the most to lose, usually those most recently in contact with the outside world.

We believe that public opinion is the most effective force for change. Its power will make it harder, and eventually impossible, for governments and companies to oppress tribal peoples.

World Trade Organization (Not) - Please note that this site is not the official WTO site, but an activist run parody.

WTO Watch/Trade Observatory - Trade Observatory is the new home of WTO Watch. In 1999, the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy (IATP) opened WTO Watch in preparation for the WTO's Seattle Ministerial. As trade, globalization and sustainable development issues have evolved since the Seattle Ministerial, so has WTO Watch. In response to the growing interest in global trade policy, IATP has expanded its focus and merged WTO Watch with the Trade Observatory.

Government (Atrocities, Cover-ups, and Political Prisoners)

Free the West Memphis Three - Perhaps you're not familiar with the West Memphis Three, or perhaps you know them as the Robin Hood Hills Murderers. Perhaps you've heard of Paradise Lost? The film [of that name] in the video stores is one to see, but only if you're ready to take up a new cause. Originally filmed for HBO by two unsuspecting filmmakers, it is a blaring report of what a fundamentalist community in the south can accomplish toward the blatant destruction of American justice. The filmmakers, Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky, were sent to West Memphis to cover what was termed a 'satanic ritual murder' for HBO Undercover. What they uncovered was no less of a crime than that done against the three poor eight year old boys whose deaths prompted the coverage in the first place.

The web site presents compelling evidence that fear, prejudice, rumors, incompetence and sensational journalism converged in a modern-day witch trial that resulted in the conviction of three innocent teenagers for a murder they did not commit.

Judi Bari - This website is dedicated to Judi Bari. Judi was a renowned environmental, labor and social justice leader. She organized nonviolent protests against destructive corporate logging of the redwood forests. She died of breast cancer on March 2, 1997.

Judi Bari was nearly killed in a still-unsolved terrorist attack on May 24, 1990, when a motion-triggered pipe bomb wrapped with nails exploded directly under her driver's seat. She and Darryl Cherney were driving through Oakland, California when the bomb exploded. They were on a concert and speaking tour to recruit college students for Redwood Summer, a campaign of nonviolent mass protests against corporate liquidation logging.

Judi was maimed and disabled by the bombing, while Darryl received lesser injuries. In the previous two months, both had received numerous death threats from timber industry supporters and had reported them to local police. They had copies of written death threats in the car, where investigators found them. Right away, Judi and Darryl told paramedics and police officers that they had been bombed because of their activism against the timber industry, and both of them separately named the same individuals and a right-wing group that they believed were behind the bombing.

But instead of investigating the bombing as attempted murder, as the evidence clearly showed, the FBI, with the willing collaboration of the Oakland Police, tried to frame Judi and Darryl for the bombing, further victimizing them by false arrest and accusing them of knowingly transporting the bomb that nearly killed them.

Leonard Peltier - On June 26, 1975. two FBI agents drove onto a family's land on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota, following an Indian they said had "stolen some cowboy boots." Somehow their appearance and behavior precipitated a shoot-out in which the FBI agents and an Indian man died. Within hours of the shootout, according to the U.S. Civil Rights Commission, hundreds of paramilitary-equipped, combat-clad FBI agents and U.S. Marshalls staged a dragnet through the reservation in a fever of revenge in which men, women and children were searched and terrified, property and houses ransacked. There was no investigation into the death of the Indian.

Leonard had been previously identified as an American Indian Movement leader by the FBI and targeted by their notorious COINTELPRO program which "neutralized" such people by dirty tricks and arrest. Fearing no possibility of a fair trial and perhaps immediate execution, Leonard fled to Canada where he was arrested and extradited under eye-witness affidavits manufactured by the FBI that the government has admitted are false.

Three men were initially accused of the murders. Two were acquitted and the Government dropped all charges against the third to concentrate the full prosecutive weight of the government against Leonard Peltier. He was convicted for the deaths of the agents and sentenced to two consecutive life terms. The government has subsequently changed its theory on who killed the agents and today admits they have no idea who did kill them.

According to the final decision of the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals, (which astoundingly upheld Leonard's conviction) Peltier's trial and previous appeals have been riddled with FBI misconduct and judicial impropriety, including: coercion of witnesses, the knowing use of perjury, the fabrication of evidence, and the suppression of evidence which could have proved his innocence.

The Smoking Gun - The Smoking Gun brings you exclusive documents - cool, confidential, quirky - that can't be found elsewhere on the Web. Using material obtained from government and law enforcement sources, via Freedom of Information requests, and from court files nationwide, we guarantee everything here is 100% authentic.

Spirit of Freedom: Earth Liberation Prisoners - Earth Liberation Prisoners exists to support people who have been arrested and imprisoned for acts of direct action in defense of animals and the earth. However this doesn't mean we see these prisoners as the only ones worthy of support. There are many people imprisoned across the world for their political beliefs, for defending themselves against a violent partner or in a racist attack. E.L.P suggests readers contact other prisoner support groups in the contacts section. 'Spirit of Freedom' is the prisoners listings newsletter of E.L.P providing addresses and other details of prisoners so that supporters can write to prisoners and show their support.

E.L.P believes that it is vital that as a movement we support our prisoners. One of the easiest and best ways of doing this can be to write letters to people on the inside. Prison is designed to isolate people from their family, friends and community, we can all help break that isolation by writing to those on the inside and showing our solidarity. Prison can be hard but most of all it can be extremely boring, by writing to prisoners we can help alleviate both of these things. Writing to someone you don't know may seem daunting at first, not knowing what to say etc., but it gets easier and you can always start by sending a short note on the back of a postcard to brighten a cell wall. Always remember that all mail is read by the screws so don't say anything that could incriminate yourself or others. For more info on writing to prisoners contact your local Anarchist Black Cross group.

Thomas Paine - TomPaine.com is a public interest journal inspired by the great patriot Thomas Paine, author of Common Sense and The Rights of Man. Paine was a man of humble origins and modest education, but he became a writer of extraordinary skill and passion. He used his talent to advance the cause of liberty and democracy against distant and unaccountable rulers.

Government (Political Parties, Organizations, and Resources)

Green Party - Green politics is an ecological approach to politics that links social and ecological problems. Ecology studies the relationships among organisms and their environment. Political ecology brings human institutions and ideologies into this holistic perspective.

Libertarian Party - The Libertarian Party is your representative in American politics. It is the only political organization which respects you as a unique and competent individual.

Natural Law Party - The Natural Law Party was founded in April 1992 to "bring the light of science into politics." Its founders, a group of a dozen educators, businessmen, and lawyers, knew that field-tested solutions to America's problems already existed but were being ignored by government, due primarily to the pervasive influence of special interests.

Thomas - U.S. Congress Online - Acting under the directive of the leadership of the 104th Congress to make Federal legislative information freely available to the Internet public, a Library of Congress team brought the THOMAS World Wide Web system online in January 1995, at the inception of the 104th Congress. Demon Box - What the fukk is demon box? It's: a house & collective / a music studio / a record company / a publishing house / a mailorder and distro / a web/internet firm / a screen/print workshop

This is because of; in the name of free human creativity and true anarchy; independence, tolerence, will and a belief in a lasting alternative. not because we have to - just because we deserve better - and know that we must fight to to keep deserving it.

DIY Search - What is DIY? DIY stands for: Do It Yourself and it describes an ethic and a community. The ethic is one of not needing the assistance of a large company of producing a service or a product. The ethic is about being able to stand on your own two feet, its about developing your own ideas and carrying them out, without the backing of a corporation. The community is built up of those who believe in DIY. Those people who would rather produce their own "thing" without going and getting help from big business. The whole idea is, that once big business is involved, that the orginal creator of the "thing" is cut out of the creative process, and thus the "thing" is tarnished. The DIY community is composed of independent publishers, artists, mucisians, writers, artisens and thinkers.

What is DIY Search? DIY Search is a search engine, just like Yahoo, Lycos, Excite and the rest. DIY Search is different because all we catalog are DIY projects. We have a rather rigerous screening process (about 20 times more rigerous than Yahoo).

VGKids - VG Kids! is an independent manufacturer of custom t-shirts and vinyl stickers. We use the internet as a tool to provide a resource to free thinking bands, record labels, businesses, and social activists, keeping our prices low to make high quality promotional material available to the people we want to support.

War

Antiwar.com - Forged in the experience of the first Balkan war, Antiwar.com has become the Internet newspaper of record for a growing international movement, the central locus of opposition to a new imperialism that masks its ambitions in the rhetoric of "human rights" and "humanitarianism." The totalitarian liberals and social democrats of the West have unilaterally and arrogantly abolished national sovereignty and openly seek to overthrow all who would oppose their bid for global hegemony. They have made enemies of the patriots of all countries, and it is time for those enemies to unite or perish alone.

Antiwar.com is dedicated to building an international opposition to the globalist and interventionist forces that would enslave us all in a New World Order on which the sun never sets.

The Nonviolence Web - Nonviolence.org is your source for up-to-minute news and commentary on peace and nonviolence.

United for Peace - United for Peace is a collaboration of national and international peace and social justice organizations and scores of local places of worship, peace centers, and community organizations.

We all share the belief that the commemoration of September 11 and the loss of thousands of innocent lives that happened on that day should bring us together to work for a peaceful future, not a future of more war and violence.
